Growing Great Girls
Why Girls?
Gender is social not biological. While society’s expectations affect both boys and girls, studies show that girls are more disadvantaged by them. Programs that aspire to serve men and women, or boys and girls, often end up not working well for one or the other. “You can’t just paint the walls pink and call it a girls’ program” says James Bell of the W. Haywood Burns Institute.
Universal programs always rest on some sort of assumptions about gender. And, more often than not those assumptions are male. Programs that have not accounted for gender won’t produce results. If programs not only respond to the real situations of women and girls but actually improve their situations – particularly through education – women and girls will find ways to benefit their families, their neighborhoods and their communities.

COMMUNITY COLLABORATION
As a coalition, we seamlessly work with many organizations throughout the Jacksonville area. Partnering with other girl-serving non-profits help us gain the knowledge to be able to help our girls for a better and more equal future.
ADVOCACY
Feeling like there are countless pressing issues that no single program could make a marked difference? Our advocacy 101 programs work to empower women and girls to figure out what needs the community has and what can be done at the state level to make change.
QUARTERLY WORKSHOPS
Through our quarterly workshops, we have the potential to make real and positive change. This is one of our key areas of focus here at First Coast Girls Initiative , and a source of much success for our Women and Girls in the Jacksonville area.
